Ralph M.
Gignac was a Captain in the medical core and was stationed state
side. He performed many duties but was fond of flight crew
examinations and after the war did all the exams for American
airlines in Detroit; I do not know if a connection existed or
not.
He was in the army,
but spent a lot of his service flying around.
His favorite tale
takes place in the cockpit of a B-17 while flying over Mount
Rushmore, when everybody was poised with their brownie box
cameras, including the pilot. " He placed the
controls between his knees and dived the nose straight towards
the mountain. Everybody had their eye fixed on the range
finder waiting for the Mount to fill it. Finally we took the
shot as the pilot realized how close they were, he grabbed the
controls and pulled back. Everyone in the cockpit who was not
strapped down cart wheeled thru the plane. "
