Marie Damois is the mother of Élisabeth Faucher who married Étienne
Langlois, 2nd generation of the Langlois family, and is our direct
ancestor.
Marie was born about 1649 in Saint-Jean d'Elbeuf (Rouen, France),
daughter of Pierre Damois and Marie Lefebvre. After her father's
death, Marie left for Canada in 1669 at about age 20, bringing with her
goods worth an estimated 350 livres for her dowry.
On 15 Oct 1669, Marie married Léonard Faucher dit Saint-Maurice at
Quebec City and was given the King's Gift of 50 livres. She could
not sign the marriage contract but her husband could. He was a
carpenter born about 1646 in France and can be found in the 1666 census as
the indentured servant of Antoine Rouillard in Quebec City.
Marie Damois died 20 Dec 1708 and was buried the same day at
Neuville.
The fact that the standard 24-hour waiting period before burials was not
observed suggests that she may have been the victim of the unidentified
epidemic that struck the colony that year. Leonard Faucher dit
Saint-Maurice died 15 Apr 1726 and was buried the same day at Neuville.
