In 1873, Sarah was hired as the first school teacher in Portage, Michigan and held school for three months. The school was held at the old shingle mill of Porter and Company. page 52 from the The Story of Portage, Elsket B Chaney

(Niels Christian BERTELSEN was born on 20 Jun 1851 in Albaek, Hjorring, Denmark, christened on 29 Jun 1851 in Albaek, Hjorring, Denmark, died on 20 Feb 1937 in Highland Park, MI and was buried on 21 Feb 1937 in Bertelson Cemetery, Bear Lake, MI.)

  Marriage Notes:

Niels age 25 and Sarah age 20, both of Onekama, Michigan. Niels occupation was Farmer, recorded in the Record of Marriages of Manistee County, volumne 2, page 50, entry #15. Witnesses were: William Crosby and Howard D Bradford.
