In 1873, Sarah was hired as the first school teacher in Portage, Michigan and held school for three months. The school was held at the old shingle mill of Porter and Company. page 52 from the The Story of Portage, Elsket B Chaney

Niels age 25 and Sarah age 20, both of Onekama, Michigan. Niels occupation was Farmer, recorded in the Record of Marriages of Manistee County, volumne 2, page 50, entry #15. Witnesses were: William Crosby and Howard D Bradford. |
