America's oldest landscaped garden -- created in 1749 by Henry Middleton of Charleston. Geometry and symmetry were key elements in the early design of the garden -- greatly influenced by André Le Nôtre who designed the Palace Gardens at Versailles. It took 100 slaves almost a decade to complete such an ambitious project.
