Our trip concentrated on the eastern side of the continent - 4 days in Sydney, 4 days in Cairns and then 4 days in Melbourne.  You lose/gain a day flying in/out of Sydney and Melbourne.  We had a package tour through Quantas which include all our airfares, hotels and most day tours.  It's a great place to visit with lot's of friendly people.
